So, to retain flexibility North leads an intermediate diamond - ten or nine. East must duck or North is home, so North repeats the procedure. Now North switches to hearts. What does East do? If he rises with the king declarer ducks leaving East a choice of methods in conceding the rest. If East ducks the heart then declarer wins heartA and exits with another to end-play East in diamonds.

East can beat the contract by discarding heartK early on - but that would be even more unlikely than North finding the winning line. Shame isn't it? The full hand ...
