* spades + diamond tolerance

North-South were the only pair to play in spades. At one of the other tables East played in 3NT(!) on a diamond lead - a great result. One West played in 5club making the obvious ten tricks. At the fourth table South played in a quiet 3diamond making exactly nine tricks.

27/11/224: I suspect that, after the given opening lead to 4spade, if East switches to a trump and West ducks, then the contract can always be beaten. Step forward Deep Finesse.

03/04/2026 Our DDA reckons 4spade is unmakeable - and that's good enough for me.
