By cashing diamondA and crossing to heartA, only to see East show out, you have lost nothing - West's diamond is now known to be a singleton and another diamond trick is assured. If East has ducked twice from heartKxxx for some strange reason then we need to guess well. West will not throw a club on the third heart and allow himself to be end-played with dummy's last club, so he'll throw a diamond - we need to guess if his last one is the king! If the hearts are 3-3 - bingo - East's king drops under the ace!!

There is an alternative line, of course, equally successful in this instabce ..
