North did come in - with 2diamond. East passed, South bid 2heart(!) and a naive West passed. North raised to 3heart, East bid 3spade and West finally emerged with 4spade where 3NT might well have been successful. The obvious diamond lead soon put paid to the inferior contract. West was surprised that South, a lady of apparent sweet innocence, should perpetrate such a deed, but he should have doubled to expose the psyche.
