Anything but a diamond lead would have been fatal for the defence against 3NT by West. Say North leads a heart - as he might do after South's little joke. Declarer wins the king in dummy, finesses a club (North is known to have a "red-shift" hand) and puts North on lead with three more rounds of hearts to a concede a ninth trick in a suit of his choice.

Had North started with a diamond it is possible to arrange for South to be on lead after cashing three diamond winners. The spade switch ensures a fifth defensive trick.
