This was a hand that played itself .... after the initial decision about what to do at trick two had been taken. South could tell from the bidding and East's diamond3 that the diamonds were five-one, so ducking was a non starter. The choice was to play trumps immediately, or play a club and hope to avoid a trump loser when West played three rounds of diamonds. With East having twelve non-diamonds as opposed to West's eight, South decided that there was no mileage in postponing the trump play and immediately crossed to spadeK and ran the ten. When West showed out South drew all East's remaining trumps, but it was poor West was suffering. One diamond and one heart could be spared, but the fourth trump squeezed him in three suits...
