You might feel vaguely confident about defending 1diamond, but you have to decide about the possibility of missing a game when North has a good hand. The trouble is, if North has a good hand why has he not bid already? Eventually South protected with 1spade. North made an enquiry with 2diamond and South waffled with 3diamond, unsure how best to proceed. This was enough encouragement for North and he jumped to game.
