East had already had one good bit of good fortune when South returned a diamond - a club would have spelt almost certain defeat. As it was, declarer threw a club on diamondK and rattled off the trumps.

Funny things happen in these situations - players of all abilities lose their capacity to think rationally. North-South discarded in such a way to reduce the ending to this four card position ..
