East won the first two trumps in hand with intermediate trumps. He then led heartJ to tempt a naive South into covering, but when the eight appeared he went up with the ace and led a club to the king and ace. South switched to a diamond, so declarer won in the dummy, and cashed heartK to see if the gods were smiling. Had both defenders followed but the queen not come down, he had intended to continue with diamondK discarding a heart, and ruff a heart hoping to gain from any three-three heart break.
