West decided, not unreasonably, that the diamonds would have to be established for the contract to succeed, so he played diamondJ at trick one. South won, led a suit-preference diamond6 for his partner to ruff, won heartA return and led a third round of diamonds. Although declarer correctly rose with spadeK to prevent a second undertrick, it was too late. Yet even if West rises with diamondA, the defence should prevail. West can enter hand immediately with a club to lead a spade towards dummy, but North ducks. When eventually a heart is led it is won by South who plays king and another diamond. South must ruff high and leads a trump towards dummy. North wins to exit with a third trump, and now declarer simply runs out of tricks.
