This hand is somewhat easier to analyse when sitting relaxed at home rather than in the pressure cooker atmosphere of a big final. North was a world class player, and West knew that he wouldn't be leading dummy's suit simply because there was an "r" in the month. West could envisage that there were two likely reasons - either he was trying to pull a fast one with something like diamondKQ107, or diamond7 was a singleton.
