Although West is a friend, I am not familiar with the methods that he and his partner use in this situation, but I would be surprised if they did not use 2NT as a "check-back". 2NT allows East to bid hearts with, for example, a 3-4-5-1 shape, raise to 3NT with 3-3-5-2 or 3-2-5-2, or with four card spade support simply bid 3spade or 4spade depending on strength. This match was such that no possible game could be missed, especially vulnerable, so on hearing 2NT from his partner East immediately jumped to 4spade.

How would you play 4spade on the lead of diamond7?
