Firstly, let's see what actually happened. Our novice declarer made a faultless start by winning the spadeA. He then cashed diamondK and, when West showed out on the next diamond, had to be strongly persuaded that it was right to play the ace! After taking a club finesse and playing two more rounds, the club8 was established. This finessing business was proving to be good fun, so declarer led a small heart ... And put the nine in!

That particular operation was unsuccessful but the patient lived to tell the tale. 5diamond made for 100 points (rubber bridge).
