The format of the match was a sort of 'Teams of Eight Rubber Bridge', but the exact format escapes my fading memory. There were however, two things that I have not forgotten. The first was one of the strongest hands that I have ever held, and the second I'll tell you about later.

In the Jurassic era, I used to play Culbertson, but I had not encountered a hand like South's, and we had no system agreement what to do with an eleven trick 28 count. How on earth do you bid it?
