*Splinter, support + spade shortage
~Roman Blackwood

West made the unfortunate choice of spade5 as her opening lead. This had the effect of imposing sole custodial duties of the spade suit on herself. Her partner's ten forced a high honour from declarer, but the nine now became an additional threat. After three rounds of clubs, West was forced to make a difficult discard. Her actual decision to shed a heart meant that declarer was able to establish her twelfth trick without a having to resort to a finesse or squeeze.
