As West had not ruffed in front of dummy with the outstanding diamond9, it was clear he had started with two cards in each of the minors. Remembering that there was no Lightner Double from East, South played a small spade from dummy with the intention of winning with the Ace, drawing the last trump and conceding a spade for +1370. Disaster! East ruffed the spade and played another club. With still a theoretical chance, South ruffed the club and ran the trumps in an attempt to catch West in a major suit squeeze, hoping that he had both major suit kings. You can probably guess what happened.
