Faced with an array of finesses, South decided to take the one which would have most to gain and give the greatest resolution. Accordingly, he won the lead in dummy with diamondA and played a club to the Queen. When this finesse was successful, the way forward was clearer, so he cashed another trump, West following with the diamond8 and East the diamond6. All followed to clubA, but West discarded a spade when declarer ruffed his remaining club with dummy's last trump.
