No doubt you think this is a strange question and you are saying "diamonds of course!". This is manifestly correct but East, normally a strong player, had a blind spot when he followed a different defence. He had found the vital diamond lead but inexplicably played low on North's low heart at trick three. Eventually he pitched a club on a top spade and North brought home the contract with the aid of the club finesse.

This proved to be an expensive board when 6spade, which might been considered a better contract, was reached at the other tables. The usual result was one or two off.
