When North returned heart2 at trick two Rowlands knew that the hearts were certainly 5-2, so there was no point in holding up. On winning heartK he played three rounds of diamonds and North won to lead a low club. To ensure South was kept out off lead declarer rose with clubK to advance spadeQ. When West covered declarer was saved an agonising guess and Rowlands had clocked up no fewer than eleven tricks. Plus 750 and 14 IMPs in all.
