The rest of the announcement was submerged in a cacophony of shouting, cheers and whistles.
Eventually The TD ws able to continue. "The first prize is an all expenses paid trip to the Juan-les-Pins congress on the French Riviera. You'll be playing with Miss Lake.in the Mixed Pairs. Second prize is a game at the Young Chelsea with her. Third prize is a copy of my classic book 'The exciting rules of contract bridge - my life of Tournament Directing'. At that point some wag shouted out "and five copies for last place". Eveyone laughed. Except the TD.

After good results rounds 28, 29 and 30, Jim calculated that his score overall ran at just over 60%. He would probablly need a top to be in there with a chance. As he approcahed the final table, he could see that the pre tournament favourite, Spike Goode, would be on his right. Jim's pulse shot up to 165, his mouth became dry and there were paplitations in his chest, but it wasn't his opponents causing the reaction . . . .
