Why has North not continued with a second diamond? Easy - he hasn't got one. Why hasn't he switched to a trump - because he's reluctant to do so because of his holding. It looks like North is 9-1-1-2 and therefore you can give yourself a good chance by cashing ace and another club. North wins and continues with spades - his only choice ..
