East should not have covered heart8. Now declarer is unable to ruff a spade and draw trumps whilst still retaining a fifth trump in hand. Say declarer overtakes, ruffs a spade, cashes heartA. Now the only way back to hand is via a club ruff. clubQ comes down but after trumps are drawn West can defeat declarer by retaining diamondAQ and two spades.

Nevertheless, declarer should always get home - he should have played a spade before drawing any trumps. Now there is no problem - South wins the club return, crosses to hand with heartK, ruffs a spade low and draws trumps. The difference here is that declarer has a trump and spadeK left to retain control after drawing all of East's trumps.
