It seemed now that partner's 2NT may have been intended as a waiting move - this would be consistent if he had assumed that your 4th suit forcing 2diamond had actually been game forcing - otherwise why a slam-try of 4diamond now? His most likely shape would be 2-5-2-4, so 4heart seemed to be the obvious waiting bid. Partner had built up steam now and 5club was his next offering.
