. . . would have been to draw trumps in as many rounds as necessary. If the trumps prove to be 3-2 after all then declarer plays hearts from the top. A ruffing finesse is available if North starts with heartQ. Only if South has heartQxxx and the diamonds break badly would the contract fail in this case.
If the trumps really are 4-1 then East cashes the top three diamonds. If they don't break then East falls back on a first round heart finesse - gaining when South had heartQxxx.
