Maybe East should have realised, but after seeing South's spadeJ and ruffing a third round of diamonds with spadeA, he was fixated with playing North for spade9764. You don't need me to tell you what happened, do you? Oh alright - North-South scored +50.

Surely declarer should have crossed to spadeA at trick four, abandoning all silly ideas of bringing in the diamonds if they were 4-2. A much better idea ....
