In the other room South ended in 3diamond and West led a spade. South judged well to win the first spade, cash clubAK and ruff a club in hand. He now seemed well placed to take two rounds of trumps ending in dummy, a further club ruff and exit with a diamond. Now West would be forced to open up the hearts. In fact only one club ruff is necessary - South can then play three rounds of trumps to put West in and throw a loser when West tries to exit with clubQ. South did not find either of these lines and meandered to a quiet one off.

Note here East's good judgment with a clever negative double of 2club rather than a straight 2spade. This enabled him to support his partner's hearts and by way of the double show spades too, all without getting into the deep water of the three level.
