At the table North could see the danger of continuing with clubA and another club. Declarer would pitch a losing diamond and the net result would be an escape for one down. North cleverly switched to diamond2 at trick two. After two rounds of diamonds North was on lead to continue with clubs and now declarer had to lose six tricks.

Note that 2spade would at least two down if the defence is vigilant. Say South leads a club North wins and switches to a heart (difficult!). Declarer puts in the nine and South ducks. South wins spadeA, switches to heartK and now declarer has to lose two diamonds, two clubs, a heart ruff and two spades - for North-South can engineer a trump promotion.
