Look what East, Tony Forrester, had done! Had he not false carded with clubQ then declarer, with no realistic alternative available, would have ruffed a club with diamondQ and cashed the ace to drop East's king. Now South simply ruffs back to hand, draws two more trumps and plays on clubs for an easy twelve tricks.

By false-carding, East had created an illusion that would allow South to gain when West had diamondKx. After all, to refuse the finesse and play diamonds from the top would seem suicidal to declarer in these circumstances. West would win diamondK and lead a third club for East to ruff.
