South returned to hand with a low trump to the king and ruffed another diamond with clubA. It was now quite straightforward to return to hand with a heart ruff, but had East followed to the heart with the queen then South had the option of pitching his losing spade rather than guess how the trumps were breaking.

The net result on this board was a 12 IMP swing when 3NT, not necessarily a "gimme", was the contract in the other room.
