South saw the establishment of the diamonds as the best way forward, with the possibility of converting into a full-blown cross-ruff should East prove to have five or more diamonds. Declarer played spade9 from dummy on the opening lead and won East's queen with the ace. diamondA, diamond ruff, heartA, heart ruff and a second diamond ruff passed off without incident. However, diamondK had not come down.
