If when East ruffed in with the spadeK she had exited with a heart declarer can no longer shorten his trumps and so cannot endplay West. On a diamond lead 3spade is cold. Strangely enough this wasn't the result recorded at the other table, NS went down some number in clubs, not a great result as I believe 5diamond can be made with the East West cards (except on a heart lead by South).
