In the end my partner took a first round trump finesse and lost to the queen only to find later it was singleton. 'Can't make it anyway' he said, 'because even if I drop the singleton queen I still lose out to East's heart8.. Hang on though' he thought. Yes, he was right. The trump coup against East still works but this time declarer only needs to shorten his trumps by one. All that is required is to ruff one black suit winner and return to table and the heart107 lie over East's heart86. I wish partner had got it right. It would have been a first for me to witness a grand coup against the eight of trumps.
