How about the unexpected play of a diamond to the queen, inviting West to ruff? When he ruffs and returns a spade (best) you will ruff in dummy and ruff a diamond high in hand. Irrespective of whether he over-ruffs or not you can now establish the diamonds without having to resort to a cross-ruff.

It's a similar position, if slightly less flexible, if you play a trump at trick two. West ducks - but you now play diamondQ.
