. . . one South did subscribe to the aforementioned theory. Over 2diamond he passed! West bid 2NT to enquire and North bid 3NT (unusual). Over South's 4heart West started doubling, North retreated to 5diamond and East joined in the doubling fun. Now South tried his second suit at the six level - West had a piece of that and 6club doubled was the contract. North put down a satisfactory dummy and thirteen tricks rolled in without much fuss. This result, albeit with a slightly different auction, was duplicated at another table. The worst result for North-South came at the fourth table where they some allowed their opponents to play in 5spade making! This can be beaten double-dummy, but even that would be poor consolation for missing a cold grand slam.
