4spade should always be defeated. The easy way is for West to lead an initial diamond and put East in with heartA to receive a diamond ruff. However it's much better for West to lead heartQ initially. South has to ruff to avoid immediate defeat, so he plays trumps and West ducks twice. If South plays a third round he will finish several light, but in probability he should foresee the problems and switch to diamonds. West pitches three hearts and a club, but when South eventually leads a club West wins, cashes spadeA and plays his last heart to put South two off.
