The problem with ruffing three spades in dummy is that there will only be heartA left in dummy, so unless heartK is a singleton the defence will win a trump trick. West spotted this and played to establish the clubs, starting with ace and another club at tricks two and three. Seeing what West was up to, South continued spades, but eventually West was able to ruff two clubs in hand, finessing heart9 for the first entry and using heartA as the second.
