At the table East bid the "obvious" (his own word) 7diamond, and even though South led a trump declarer had no chance. With only one entry to dummy East was resigned to playing for North to hold diamondKx, so the grand slam failed.

Had East bid 7NT then East would have had a chance. A spade lead gives East an eleventh top trick and, having cashed spadeA, heartAK, North is squeezed in the red suits on the run of the clubs. A initial diamond lead makes life even easier, for East can now bring in both minor suits. Only on a club or heart lead is 7NT defeated. So what could East have done had West overcalled 4club originally ..?
