At the table West rattled off all his trump winners to cause both defenders problems. On the last trump North had to throw a diamond, for to pitch a club or spade would mean immediate success for declarer. However it didn't matter which diamond he threw either:- to bare the ace would allow declarer to exit with a low one. North could now cash clubQ but declarer would throw the useless diamondQ and North would have to lead from spadeK. Alternatively if North jettisons diamondA on the last trump, as actually happened, then declarer leads spadeQ, covered with the king and ace, and leads a diamond towards the queen for the tenth trick.
