. . . that the contract is cold even if West had not found the unfortunate high spade lead. Whatever West leads South can duck a spade and run off his black suit winners to squeeze East. The only problem is that declarer cannot tell if East has actually been squeezed - in which case heartQ will drop under the jack - or if the heart finesse was right all the time. This would be the ending - with East still to find a discard to bring him down to four cards.. When diamondQ is cashed and West throws a spade, declarer can tell that either East has been squeezed already or the heart finesse will work. But which? The odds are 4 to 3 in favour of East holding the queen but it would have been so much more friendly if West had led a high spade to save you the headache. The little gem indeed!
