. . . our old friend the Rule of Restricted Choice. If East had started with clubJ102 then because the jack and ten have, in effect, equal status, East might have chosen to play the jack sometimes and the ten on other occasions. The fact that he played the ten therefore made it much more likely that he had no choice in the matter! It's slightly amazing that The Rule, originally postulated by Terence Reese, is also theoretically solid as a rock.
