. . . . if you played spadeJ - bravo! This retains control of the trump suit and you can cope with anything that East can throw at you. Say he ducks spadeJ (best). You lead club5 to the ace and ruff a heart low and presumably East will over-ruff and return a trump. Now all you lose is spadeK.

Another successful line after East ducks spadeJ is to ruff three diamonds in hand, using clubQJ as extra entries. East has to follow all the way, and South's tenth trick is spadeA.
