With the assured entry of diamond10 still available, declarer ought to have cashed a high heart at this point, guarding against a singleton heartJ in the West hand, but instead she cashed diamond10 first. East threw club2 and West spade5. Although declarer was almost sure that East had begun with five hearts and a finesse against East's hypothetical jack would be necessary to bring in four heart tricks, it was now impossible to safety-play the hearts in the way mentioned above because they would be blocked.
