Firstly, would you have led spade3 from that North spade holding? Many players prefer not include the ten in "high" honours and therefore would have treated those North spades as four low. After seeing spade8 lead South has an even easier decision to switch to hearts at trick four.

Secondly, if declarer plays ace, king and another diamond then North has a very difficult switch to find. Would you have found it? Don't ask North - he's still asleep.
