The winning defence is to continue with another heart. Partner's necessary heart switch has opened the way for the defence to score five winners, but is heart8 the best card to play from heartAQJ8 when heart7654 is in dummy? North, a rather dozy player at the best of times, would have found difficulty in returning a heart whatever South had played, but heartQ would perhaps have served as a better wake up call.
