North wimped out and it nearly cost his side dear. With little to guide him South played ace and another spade and North could only continue with diamondK. East, who had fooled everyone with his warped opening bid and acceptance of the transfer, ruffed in dummy, cashed heartKQ, and started chuckling.

On the threshold of a great result, he had to decide now whether to ruff a spade and cash heartA, hoping that the trumps were 3-3 but risking going for a bundle if the trumps broke 4-2. Alternatively, he could hope that the clubs were 1-1, which would allow him to cross to dummy and score still 620 if trumps broke kindly, yet did not risk losing 400. A relieved North was happy to write down +100 when East chose the wrong alternative. Other considerations .
