In 4spade, North ruffs the opening diamond in dummy, crosses to hand with clubQ and ruffs another diamond. After ditching a third diamond on clubA North plays dummy's last trump and the 3-2 break means that East-West can make no more than three trump tricks.

In the more modest contract of 3spade a less ambitious declarer, fearful of a trump promotion, might play a trump without taking the risk of cashing the top clubs to discard a third diamond. Nine tricks are still readily available.
