You might be wondering what would have happened in the first room if West had returned a heart instead of club8 at trick eight? Declarer comes to hand with his penultimate trump as before but what has East played to the ninth trick? There still is no answer. The trumps squeeze still operates but in a slightly different way. If East pitches a club the declarer cashes the top two clubs and enters hand with a ruff for the final club winner. If East discards a heart then the final trick is the heart winner in dummy. It takes a non-diamond lead to beat 4spade. Try it. The blame must go to the rather timid bidding in one room or the poor choice of lead in the other.
