3heart showed spades and a minor (either min or max) and 3NT was an enquiry that could also show a positive acceptance in spades with only three trumps. Partner made the slightly odd decision to play the hand in 6club and not 6spade, on the grounds that the lead coming into the South hand might be worth a trick or half. I took the heart lead and banged down the club ace, all following. Given the sight of partners hand, the bidding (East's 2heart showed five hearts plus a four+ minor and less than opening values), and the fact we'd not received a Lightner double, I placed East with at least 5/5 possibly 5/6, in the reds, and probably 1/2, 2/1 or 1/1 in the blacks. The odds surely favoured a second round club finesse, but then I started thinking.......
