1spade Pass 2spade ???
So you must grasp your chance now or pass forever. The biggest risk is going for 300/500 with no game for them, and once they have established their fit, that would require some wild distribution all the way around.
One other upside is that partner may be sitting pretty with a trap pass holding something like spadeQJ9x, but no clubK or diamondK. Your bid will not please him, but he will smile smugly if they compete to 3spade! The biggest reason for bidding is this: if you pass, and they both pass, your partner will have some spade length, and will not be in a position to balance, hence, you must speak now, or pass forever. No-one said there was no risk, but on deeper analysis, after 2NT or 3diamond, surely there are more good than bad scenarios? A new problem is whether to bid 3diamond or 2NT. No-one said this game was easy! In this case, there's good news whatever you bid! What actually happened?
