Winning in hand, declarer led a club, won by West's ten. Another trump, another club, and a third trump from Jill Gore meant that declarer had to lose a diamond and was one off. Note that Colin and Jill have produced a perfect defence, but South would have done much better to win the opening lead in dummy and lead a club, for if East fails to play the nine the contract is now solid. With the clubs blocked, the defence cannot effectively play three rounds of trumps and South eventually ruffs a club in dummy for the tenth trick.

There is another interesting alterative defence to 4spade ..
